Winston (Bopeep) Bowen
Jamaica, known as the "Reggae Island" of the Caribbean is blessed with an abundance of natural musical talent. One such talent is Winston "Bo-peep" Bowen, "musician exceptional".
It takes a special gift to be unique, innovative and outstanding all together. These words describe Bo-peep, guitarist extraordinaire and veteran musician whose skills as songwriter, percussionist, arranger, vocal and producer are only some aspects of his musical talent and appeal. Indeed his forte, his knockout punch, his missiles of strings, which he launches at his audience with unerring precision to devastating effect, is his ability as a guitarist.
The inspiring musical emperor, who hails from Limehall in Clarendon, started playing music at a tender age where the church provided an outlet for his first expression. The inspiration to play the guitar was influenced by a man who visited the district of Limehall one day with an acoustic guitar. The man played the guitar so beautiful that it left a broken string in Bo-peep's heart. This led him to make one of his own from bamboo.
Bo-peep has a lot of respect for guitarists David T. Walker, Larry Carlton, George Benson and Frank Gambalo whom he lists as some of his musical influences, and mentors. In his spare time he listens to a lot of blues and jazz performed by this renowned guitarist.
Dedication, commitment, discipline and persistence are the ingredients that make-up Bo-peep's menu of success, a diet for which he only has appetites since being in the music industry for the past twenty six (26) years. Also adding flavor to this musical menu is Bo-peep’s willingness to equip himself with the necessary skills and techniques of today's musical technology by attending the Jamaica School of Music where he was taught in-depth lessons of the guitar, keyboard and bass. Some of his skills and talents are also credited to his self-taught lessons by experimenting with these musical instruments during his spare time.
Bo-peep's foray into the professional music industry started while he was a student at Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive High School playing in the New Vibration Band, an association that lasted for four (4) years. During this time he also received some tutoring from Bobby Ellis. Bo-peep also played the steel pan with the school band. He has been a member of some of Jamaica's most outstanding bands, namely 7th Extensions, Byron Lee and The Dragonaires and Lloyd Parks & We the People Band. Bo-peep stayed with the latter for seven (7) years from 1976 - 1983. It was during his stint with this band that he went on his first tour, which took him to Cuba at a show dubbed "Cultural Exchange". In 1983, the famous 809 Band led by Dean Fraser was founded. Bo-peep, a founding member himself toured extensively during the period 1983-1993 with some of reggae's greats like Beres Hammond, Coco Tea and I Threes. Bo-peep musical journey took him to Europe, North America, Canada, Japan, Cayman, Antigua, and Trinidad & Tobago. He has also toured with renowned rock steady artists like Alton Ellis, Leroy Sibbles, Ken Boothe, John Holt, Marcia Griffiths & Bob Andy.
He was also a member of the Taxi Gang Band Aggregation led by Grammy winners Sly & Robbie who went on the Taxi Connection European Tour in Europe with international reggae artists Maxi Priest, Hal/Pint, Yellow Man, Ini Kamoze, Bunny Wailer and I Jah Man Levi Winston "Bo-peep" Bowen skills as band musician is just as unique and creative as the materials he has produced as songwriter, arranger and studio musician. The unique material he produces fits well into the context of clean and cultural reggae music. The spirituality found in much of his music is attributed to his rastafarian traditions and ideal for peace and love for all, is an integral part of his music. His affinity for such songs is expressed in the many number one hits he has played on, hits such as Love has found its' way, Money in my pocket - Dennis Brown, Someone loves you honey - J. C. Lodge, Ballistic Affair - Leroy Smart, Yaho Yaho, East Man Skankin Babylon - The Jays.
He is very much at ease playing songs of hope, vision, love and inspiration. Members of the music fraternity refer to him as the guitar powerhouse whose strong delivery hits the heart string of his diverse fan base that pepper his repertoire in his talent as arranger. Such delivery are exposed on the recently released Platinum Series, Volume I, various Artists and Tribute to king Tubby's CD on the Firehouse label, the title track Life by Anthony Red Rose and Ram Dancehall respectively.
In 1996 Bo-peep joined the Firehouse Crew band of which he is presently the lead guitarist. The band was awarded Backing Band of the Year, May 1999 by IRA WMA (International Reggae & World Music Awards). The band which has been providing exclusive backing duties for International Reggae Artist Luciano, Sizzla and Mikey General since its inception has seen Bo-peep traveling throughout the world to places like, Switzerland, Gennany, Holland, France, Mexico, Japan, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, England, Antigua & Venezuela.
When not on tours, he is busy working in the studio on his own production or laying guitar tracks for other producers, the likes of Beres Hammond, King Jammys, Phillip "Fattis" Burrell, Bobby Digital and many others. He has just completed his first
CD entitled Bo Plays Mello Moods, which is to be released soon. Some of the titled tracks on the CD are Morning dew; Make it with you, and Natural high, which is a cover version. 1998 marked a significant year for Bo-peep as his long life dream became a reality when he formed his own production company with partners Horace Brown and Junior "chico' Chin, fellow musicians and long time friends.
Now joining forces with his company, and partnering up with Jobeshill Records, Winston Bowen has accepted the role of Vice president.
The goals and aims of this company are to produce entertaining, uplifting, good quality music and to venture into successful show promotion and production in the future.
Bo-peep is confident that his musical journey will lead us to the path of international success, achievement and recognition.
